Do the Work on Your Own

Your best money saving option is to just paint everything yourself. This can be the obvious way to go for smaller jobs, but painting your entire house, particularly the exterior, may be beyond you. Just make sure that you at least consider doing the work on our own before you go and hire somebody. Look over what needs to be done to see if you can manage it yourself, if you really are looking for any avenue to take to save some money.

Find Free Samples

Often, you can get free samples from paint shops, particularly big retailers, that are enough to cover the job. For those smaller jobs, a free sample may be enough to get the job done well, but don’t expect to be able to cover a large job with them.

Getting those free samples can also give you enough paint to use to make sure that you will be happy with the final product. You can save money by not having to buy a different kind of paint partway through the project than what you started with.

Ask for Unwanted Paint

Many times, there will be paint buckets full of paint sitting at retailers that were never used or only used once that are incredibly cheap. It could be marked down because the paint wasn’t mixed to the customer’s liking or specifications. The paint is perfectly usable, and it can still give you a great finished look, but it may not be exactly the colour that you dreamed of using. If you are on a tight budget, then you may have to make some concessions to get a great price on paint.

Find Materials Second-Hand

If you are looking for drop-cloths, paint brushes and other materials for a lower price than what you would pay for them in the store, then you may want to consider second-hand stores, such as thrift shops, consignment shops or other places where used materials go for sale. You can also ask the paint supply store if they have used materials they wouldn’t mind selling to you cheap. As long as these things are in usable condition, it shouldn’t matter if they are rough looking or just need some touching up and cleaning up to make useful again.

Be Careful about Buying Cheap Paint

If you are serious about looking for ways to cut your costs on a house painting job, you may start by using the cheapest paint your can find, but that’s not always a good idea. That paint can start to deteriorate, fade or chip quickly, if the quality is too low. It can actually save you money over time to go with higher quality paint, even if it costs more upfront.
